Outpatient OCD Treatment Approach

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) can make everyday thoughts, situations, and decisions feel overwhelming. You may find yourself caught in cycles of unwanted thoughts, worries, images, or urges followed by behaviors or mental rituals that temporarily reduce anxiety but keep the cycle going.

I provide evidence-based treatment for OCD utilizing ERP that focuses on understanding the patterns and learning new ways to respond. Treatment is collaborative and tailored to your specific symptoms, goals, and experiences. Together, we’ll work on making space for difficult thoughts and feelings without automatically treating them as facts, emergencies, or problems that must be solved.

The goal isn’t to eliminate every uncomfortable thought or feeling. Instead, treatment can help you become less controlled by OCD and more able to choose actions that reflect your values. This may include building awareness of OCD’s patterns, practicing mindfulness and willingness, learning skills to tolerate distress, and developing greater flexibility in how you respond to uncertainty.

What is ERP?

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is a specialized form of cognitive behavioral therapy and one of the most effective treatments for OCD. ERP involves gradually and intentionally facing situations, thoughts, sensations, or uncertainties that trigger anxiety or discomfort while practicing not engaging in compulsions or other behaviors that OCD uses to create a sense of safety.

ERP is not about forcing you to face your biggest fear all at once or pretending that something doesn’t feel difficult. We work together to develop a thoughtful, individualized approach that moves at a manageable pace. You’ll practice noticing what shows up, making room for discomfort, and responding with intention rather than automatically relying on compulsions, reassurance, avoidance, or mental rituals.

Over time, you can learn that anxiety and uncertainty are uncomfortable but survivable, and that you don’t have to wait for them to go away before moving toward what matters to you. The goal is not to feel completely comfortable or certain. It’s to build confidence in your ability to tolerate distress, loosen OCD’s grip, and live more fully in line with your values.
